MA in Advanced Comparative Islamic Studies

Required documents for the application

Below are the documents needed to apply for the MA in Advanced Comparative Islamic Studies.

  1. Your BA, MA, and/or PhD transcript.

  2. A document with the list of subjects and texts you have studied in the Islamic Sciences.

  3. Statement of Purpose:

    Your Statement of Purpose is not limited to, but should address, the following three questions:

    a. How has your education or life experience prepared you for this program?

    b. What do you hope to get out of the program?

    c. How does the program fit into your life goals?

  4. Proposal: Briefly describe in 250 words your research proposal or topic you intend to investigate and write about with a supervisor.

  5. Proof of English proficiency, if not previously educated in an English-speaking institution.

  6. Proof of Arabic proficiency, if not previously educated in an Arabic-speaking institution.

  7. Your CV.

  8. A picture of yourself.

  9. Names and e-mails of 2 references. References can include teachers, professors, supervisors, mentors, shuyukh, etc.

The Advanced Comparative Islamic Studies Program at Usul Academy is a rigorous two-year MA program designed for those pursuing more in-depth and specialized education in Islamic Studies and Comparative Social Sciences. 

Candidate requirements

Below are the requirements for applicants to be eligible for the MA in Advanced Comparative Social Sciences:

  1. Candidates must have at least a BA degree.

  2. Candidates must have completed a previous traditional Islamic Studies program similar to the subjects taught in the BA at Usul Academy. These include: Aqidah, Fiqh, Usul Al-Fiqh, Nahw, Tafsir, Kalam, etc.

  3. Candidates must show proof of English proficiency, either by being previously educated in an English-speaking institution or by submitting a certificate such as TOEFL.

  4. An Arabic level B2/Advanced-Mid according to ACTFL Standards or equivalent is required to pursue the MA degree. Students should upload proof of Arabic proficiency as a certificate, transcript, or diploma in the Arabic language if available. All accepted students will undergo an Arabic proficiency assessment.
